This rare painting by Jan van Amstel illustrates the emerging development of landscape painting in early sixteenth-century Flanders. The creation of a rustic landscape with clear yet unified divisions that recede credibly into the distance presages the method of landscape construction used by Pieter Breughel the Elder.
